Chronic Bronchitis & Chronic Cough: Different Underlying Conditions & Treatments

In an earlier post, an overview of bronchitis was presented.  This post focuses on Chronic Bronchitis and addresses why it and Chronic Cough may often be confused.  Chronic Bronchitis & Chronic Cough have different underlying conditions and treatments.  Unexplained chronic cough is less familiar within the medical community and among the general public resulting in chronic cough being mistakenly diagnosed & treated as chronic bronchitis.

Dr. Mandel Sher at Center for Cough and Dr. Sher’s cough colleagues around the globe are working tirelessly to increase awareness for Chronic Cough diagnosis & treatment.  Contact Dr. Mandel Sher, Cough Expert:  727-393-8067. www.centerforcough.com.

In both, a cough can persist for many months.  A chronic cough condition usually produces a dry, nagging cough while cough associated with chronic bronchitis is often productive meaning it produces phlegm or mucus.

People suffering with unexplained chronic cough are generally predisposed or hard-wired to cough.  In these people, cough has no other function and serves no other purpose – it is simply annoying and embarrassing with physical and social consequences. Super sensitive nerve endings at the back of the throat that are easily irritated or triggered by allergens, such as post nasal drip, reflux, and certain medications, to produce cough.

Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand,  often results from viral infections and sometimes bacteria.  Cough associated with chronic bronchitis is often triggered by cigarette smoking and exposure to lung irritants.  Chronic bronchitis can eventually clear-up only to return year-after-year.  A Mayo Clinic report states, “chronic bronchitis is defined as a productive cough that lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts occurring for at least two consecutive years.”

If you have been diagnosed and treated for chronic bronchitis but are still coughing, then you may have been misdiagnosed.  Instead of chronic bronchitis, you may have chronic cough.

Allergic Cough: Allergies May Be Triggering Your Cough

What is allergic cough?  Allergic cough refers to cough associated with allergies.  It generally occurs when the person suffering with allergies is already a “cougher” or someone who is hard-wired to cough.  Allergies are very effective irritants that may be triggering your cough.  Chronic Cough is usually a response to irritation.

Seasonal and year-round, indoor and outdoor, allergies may be the underlying condition triggering your cough IF you are hard-wired to cough.

Constant allergic coughing is uncomfortable, disruptive and annoying to you and those around you.  In addition to producing cough in people who are already “coughers” or hard-wired to cough, an allergic response can be serious, and in some cases, even life threatening.

If you are coughing and believe it may be associated with allergies, it is your best interest to be evaluated by an Allergy and Asthma specialist rather than to self-medicate symptoms.

Bronchitis & Chronic Cough: Similar Symptoms but Different Conditions with Different Treatments

Hmmm…is it bronchitis or Chronic Cough?

Bronchitis is common; so is Chronic Cough.  Because of some similar symptoms and the medical community’s and public’s awareness of bronchitis, people with Chronic Cough are sometimes misdiagnosed, incorrectly treated, and frustrated by a cough that won’t go away.  Like cough, bronchitis can be acute usually caused by viruses, or chronic usually caused by environmental factors such as cigarette smoke or air pollution.  Bronchitis & Chronic Cough have similar symptoms but are different conditions with different treatments.

Dr. Mandel Sher is a Cough Doctor. He accurately evaluates the reason for your cough and recommends treatment customized to you. Dr. Sher and Center for Cough deliver effective cough solutions that achieve sustainable cough relief.  Call today:  727-393-8067. www.centerforcough.com.

Cough and fatigue are common to both.  Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes and usually producing mucus. Chronic Cough is the result of hypersensitive nerve endings at the back of the throat being irritated and usually producing dry cough.

If you or a loved one have a generally dry, hacking cough for eight weeks or longer, then you may have Chronic Cough.

Chronic Cough can be triggered by one factor or be multifactorial.  Common triggers are:  allergies, asthma, post nasal drip, medications, and reflux.  The cause is often “itchy” nerve endings at the back of the throat that are “scratched” by coughing.  Chronic Cough has debilitating consequences for personal relationships and professional performance.  People suffering with Chronic Cough often report feeling depression, embarrassment, social isolation, urinary incontinence, and an overall decline in the quality of daily life.  Why wait? – Evaluate.  Dr. Mandel Sher:  727-393-8067. www.centerforcough.com. #breakcoughcycle, #achieverelief, #resolvecough
