Urinary Incontinence & Your Cough

Urinary incontinence describes involuntary loss of urine.  It can be a few drops or complete loss of control.  Urinary incontinence is a common problem but not a normal occurrence.  Estimates are that 25 million people in the United States suffer from urinary incontinence. While both men and women are affected, 75 to 80 percent are women.  According to research findings, women wait six years from the first time they experience urinary incontinence to seek medical attention.

Dr. Mandel Sher and Center for Cough team listen attentively to each patient’s cough narrative and review each cough patient’s medical history. Cough patients’ firsthand accounts of embarrassment associated with persistent cough compounded by urinary incontinence validate the research findings.

Dr. Mandel Sher and Center for Cough team attribute their patients’ remarkable success largely to Dr. Sher’s comprehensive and integrated approach to treating the underlying cause of Cough as well as the symptoms.  Pelvic floor muscle exercises are an integral part of effective cough relief. Cough Syncope: Fainting as a Result of Cough Episode

Cough Syncope describes momentary loss of consciousness directly and immediately associated with a coughing episode.  Syncope is more commonly referred to as fainting.  Fainting episodes can be dangerous. The good news is that Cough Syncope will be eliminated if cough is eliminated.

Cough is a common symptom of many different medical conditions.  Chronic Cough is a distinct medical condition that can result in syncope.  It is vitally important that your cough be thoroughly evaluated by a Cough Expert in order to begin cough treatment targeting your specific underlying medical condition.

Dr. Mandel Sher and Center for Cough team are dedicated Cough Specialists who will relieve or resolve your cough. Contact Dr. Sher: 727-393-8067.

Cough Syncope was first described in 1876 as “laryngeal vertigo.”  Sometimes, Cough Syncope is mistakenly worked-up as a seizure and a diagnosis of epilepsy is considered.  Therefore, reporting of fainting episodes resulting from coughing may be understated and actually may be common.

Men suffering with Chronic Cough are more likely to experience violent coughing episodes that result in syncope.

Fainting episodes are generally not predictable and, therefore, can be dangerous.  Until cough is controlled, it is recommended that you avoid activities that may compromise your or others health and safety if a fainting episode unexpectedly occurs, e.g. driving and operating machinery.

Dr. Mandel Sher formally established Center for Cough in 2009 with a dedicated focus on persons suffering with Chronic Cough, also known as Persistent Cough or Hypersensitive Cough Reflex.  Sometimes, Chronic Cough is an indication of an underlying medical condition. Sometimes, unexplained chronic cough is the problem – for these patients, Dr. Mandel Sher and the Center for Cough team serve as medical detectives.  Listening to each patient’s narrative and reviewing medical history (especially previous cough workups and therapies) are cornerstones of Dr. Sher’s approach.

All Center for Cough’s services are traditional, evidence-based medicine consistent with current clinical guidelines.  All Center for Cough’s services are a covered benefit of Medicare, commercial insurance, and other governmental programs.

Dr. Mandel Sher’s innovative and effective approach to remarkable and sustainable cough relief and resolution is based on how the Center for Cough team assembles the pieces of the cough puzzle. Contact Dr. Mandel Sher:  727-393-8067. www.centerforcough.com.
